The OHS act requires that lifting equipment be assessed and validated as fit for use.

Remember a chain is only as strong as its weakest link. Therefore when having lifting equipment inspected and certified you need to ensure it’s done from the beam or gantry that the lifting equipment is attached to, right down to the hook.

Have a certified engineer do the necessary compression and tensile strength testing especially of you have made the lifting A frame in-house.

Furthermore all slings, lifting chains and attachments must also be inspected to ensure everything used is able to deal with the specified loads.

Keep a lifting equipment register and try flag the next certification dates so that inspection can take place before any certificates expire.

It is always a case of 99.99% of the time nothing will happen, but it’s that 0.1% when something does go wrong and an accident is serious. If you have NOT complied with the law, expect problems with insurances, workman’s compensation, law suits and down time due to injury.
